Why convert PNG to JPG

Three reasons account for almost every conversion from PNG over to JPG:

• Size. PNG stores every pixel losslessly, which is wasteful for photographs. The same photo as JPG at quality 90 is typically 3–10× smaller with no visible difference.
• Compatibility. Upload forms, government portals, HR systems and plenty of desktop apps accept JPG only. A PNG screenshot of your ID gets rejected; the JPG version goes through.
• Sharing. Messengers and email clients handle JPG reliably and often recompress it gently, while a multi-megabyte PNG gets mangled or refused.

The reverse case is rarer but real: screenshots with sharp text, logos and line art genuinely belong in PNG — converting them adds artifacts around every edge. For everything else, JPG is the right target, and this page does the conversion locally.

What happens to transparency

JPG has no alpha channel, so a naive converter renders transparent pixels as black — which ruins logos and icons. This tool composites the image onto a background before encoding: white by default, with black, light grey and a custom color picker one click away in the workbench. A logo with transparent edges comes out sitting on a clean white square, exactly what forms and documents expect.

Quality 90 is the sweet spot

The quality slider (40–100) maps straight to the JPG encoder:

• 90 — visually indistinguishable from the original; the default, right for photos and scans.
• 80 — for web pages and galleries; roughly halves the size again.
• 70 and below — thumbnails and previews where bytes matter more than fidelity.
