How to choose

💰

Budget first

GLM Lite at $18/mo ($12.6 yearly), or Ark Lite at ¥40 (intro ¥9.9).

🖥️

Heavy terminal use, long generation

Claude Max 5× ($100/mo) — the Opus family leads long-horizon code work.

🐙

GitHub-native workflow

Codex (Plus $20 up) — PR/issue delegation and automated code review.

🇨🇳

Pay & connect from China

GLM, Ark, Kimi and Qwen plans take RMB payment with direct access.

📉

Occasional / elastic use

Skip subscriptions — pay-as-you-go API is cheaper under the usage breakpoint.

Frequently asked questions

What is a coding plan?
A fixed monthly subscription that unlocks a pool of coding-model usage inside CLI/IDE agent tools (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, etc.), instead of paying per token on an API.
Is there a free coding plan?
Kimi keeps a ¥0 Adagio tier with basic access, and several providers run intro offers (Ark ¥9.9). Truly unlimited free usage no longer exists — quotas keep tightening.
Can I use a coding plan with Claude Code?
Yes — GLM, Ark, Kimi and Qwen expose Anthropic-compatible endpoints; set the base URL and API key and Claude Code works with them.
Coding plan or API — which is cheaper?
Heavy users win big on subscriptions (measured subsidy multiples range from ~8× to ~27×); light users pay less on per-token API. The breakpoint math is in our plan-vs-API guide.
Which coding plans work in China?
GLM (Zhipu), Volcengine Ark, Kimi and Alibaba Qwen plans accept RMB payment with direct connections. Claude and Codex require international payment.

The tables above are the short version. This section covers what a coding plan actually is, how this comparison is maintained, and where to go next.

What is a coding plan?

A coding plan is a fixed monthly subscription that unlocks a pool of AI coding-model usage inside agent tools — Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode, ZCode and the like — instead of paying per token on an API. You pay $5–$200 (or ¥9.9–¥699) a month, and in exchange you get a quota that refreshes by the hour, day, week or month depending on the provider.

The category barely existed before 2026. GLM's Coding Plan popularized the model in the Chinese developer community, then Kimi, MiniMax, Alibaba's Qwen and Volcengine's Ark followed, while Anthropic and OpenAI folded their coding agents into Claude and ChatGPT subscriptions. Today every plan competes on three axes: price, quota mechanics, and which tools the quota works in.

The catch is always quota mechanics. A $20 plan is not "unlimited" — it is a usage pool with refresh windows (5-hour or weekly), concurrency limits and peak-hour throttling. That is why this page keeps the usage mechanics column separate from price: two plans at the same price can differ 5× in real throughput.

How this comparison is maintained

  • Every figure comes from official pricing pages or provider documentation, with a verification date shown at the top — no secondhand forum numbers.
  • Price and quota changes are logged in the timeline above. In a category where three providers changed pricing in a single quarter, the change log is as useful as the prices themselves.
  • Plan tiers are shown as the provider defines them; the "fit" line under each tier is our editorial judgment, not vendor copy.
